Chewy was not impressed with being left at the pet resort/kennel ‘forever and ever’ while his pack leaders went off to South Australia. No use trying to tell him that airlines, motels, and especially National Parks have exclusion policies. No use explaining that we would be away for 10 days and would be back. Did we feel guilty? Yes we did—though we know he is well cared for. But not enough to prevent our going away on a pet-free holiday.
One very special place we visited was the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens in Port Augusta. Michael was fascinated by the projection sundial. Plants and birds were more my scene. We both enjoyed our brunch at the café. And of all the gift shops we encountered, it was the only one where I spent money!

I have added another wombat book to my collection—Hairy Nose Itchy Butt. I’m glad the animals remain animals albeit with human traits. Kids would love the emphasis on an itchy butt—it suits their sense of humour. But as a wombat aficionado I’ve observed that it’s no laughing matter to a wombat! With wonderful colourful illustrations the book shows how humans have affected the animals’ habitat. Hairy Nose finds all his butt scratchers have been eliminated but there is hope and a happy ending.

But the awesomely special day tour to Gawler National Park and Lake Gairdner. [www.gawlerrangessafaris.com] We and a couple from Tauranga NZ were taken on this extraordinarily beautiful tour by Rosie, our driver/guide [and professional wildlife artist].
I still haven’t met a hairy-nosed wombat—but we did visit the vestibules of the home[s] of some. And, look, I do understand the problems land holders have with animal version of the tunnel borers and excavators of the mining industry.

Talking about ‘Hairy Nose Itchy Butt’ and writing for children—the lady from Tauranga told me she is neighbour to ‘Mrs Hairy Maclary’. Of course I know the books! And love them! But I hadn’t known that their creator was a Kiwi, nor that she was an illustrator before being a writer [or that author and illustrator were combined in one person--AWESOME!]
